HomeGuard Frequently Asked Questions
1. What is HomeGuard surge protection?
The HomeGuard unit is a high quality "whole house" surge protection device for residential use and is the first line defense of transient voltages as well as high energy surge currents through your electric meter service. This device is intended to protect your home's "white goods" - washer, dryer, stove, refrigerator, freezer, HVAC unit, dishwasher and garbage disposal.
2. Are there any products that are not protected by HomeGuard?
Please be aware that your HomeGuard Surge Protection device is effective only for surges that originate through your electrical panel box. Your HomeGuard Surge Protection is warranted through Meter-Treater, Inc., and is intended for your home's "white goods" - washer, dryer, stove, refrigerator, freezer, HVAC unit, dishwasher and garbage disposal. Owen Electric Cooperative also recommends you install "point-of-use" protection to your more sensitive appliances - home computers/printers, TV/satellite systems, well pumps, sprinkler systems, hard-wired security systems, etc. The HomeGuard Surge Meter Base Ring DOES NOT provide complete protection for these items, and Meter-Treater Inc. will not cover these more sensitive items in their warranty.
Lightning is the most common cause of damaging electrical surges, and it can enter your home in ways other than through the electric service. For more sensitive items such as televisions, personal computers, etc. to be fully protected from surges, all incoming wired sources such as the electric outlet, telephone lines, cable television and satellite dish cable connections must be routed through a quality point-of-use surge protection device. These can be purchased at most home supply, hardware, or discount stores.
3. Is there a warranty or a guarantee to these products?
Your HomeGuard Surge Protection is warranted through Meter-Treater, Inc., and is intended for your home's "white goods" - washer, dryer, stove, refrigerator, freezer, HVAC unit, dishwasher and garbage disposal. Please call Owen Electric at 800-372-7612 to request a copy of the HomeGuard warranty which includes features and performance ratings, along with Meter Treater Inc.'s customer-friendly toll free phone number and website. Please keep this important information available in case you would need to file a warranty claim.
4. What does it cost?
The outdoor ring can be purchased for a one-time payment of $190.00 (plus 6% state sales tax). You must contact Owen Electric to end the program. We will send a serviceman to your home to disconnect the meterbase ring.
