Kentucky Electric Cooperatives Youth Tour Provides Students with an Unforgettable Experience at the State Capitol
The annual Kentucky Electric Cooperatives Frankfort Youth Tour gave students an in-depth look at the workings of state government while also providing them with the opportunity to connect with fellow young leaders. Hosted by Owen Electric Cooperative and sister electric cooperatives from across the state, the event brought students from across the state to the Capitol for a full day of immersive learning, networking, and exploration.
The day began with a welcome from Lieutenant Governor Jacqueline Coleman in the Rotunda, setting an inspiring tone for the participants. Throughout the morning, students toured the Capitol, posed for professional headshots, and engaged with cooperative representatives. The Co-ops at the Capitol Luncheon, held in the Capitol Annex, allowed attendees to meet policymakers and cooperative leaders while learning about the role electric cooperatives play in shaping Kentucky’s energy future. The afternoon session featured an engaging lineup of speakers, including:
-Shaping Kentucky’s Energy Future: A Discussion with Members of the Rural Electric Co-op Caucus -Youth Tour alumna & 18th District Representative, Samara Heavrin -The launch of the 2025 Co-ops Vote initiative with Secretary of State Michael Adams

“My experience at the Frankfort tour was amazing. I loved all the friends I made too. Our tour guide knew every part of the building and the dates from the top of his head and many of the facts were so fascinating. I am so thankful to be a part of the Frankfort Youth Tour experience!” – Paizley Cochran, Grant County High School
“I loved getting to learn more about our state capitol and the history behind the building of it. As I am currently in engineering class, I found talking about the structure and the materials of the building very interesting. I just wanted to say thank you for the great day.” – Finn Maddox, Covington Catholic High School
“My day in Frankfort was very educational, learning about different components of our state government, and how they help our state’s electric cooperatives. I highly recommend this trip to any high schooler able to apply!” – Masen Chandler, Carroll County High School
